SJV-CYO News ...

We Need Volunteers ...

SJV CYO is always looking for volunteers and, actually, our CYO programs would not exist without the help from volunteers. Please consider stepping-up to help - whatever your talents, there is an opportunity:

  • Coaches and assistant coaches
  • Team parents and team helpers
  • Snack bar cashiers / attendants
  • Fundraising event volunteers
  • Event set-up and clean-up volunteers
  • Scoreboard / event staff

Can't afford this time/talent contribution??? Our snack bar is always willing to accept your donations ... to stock the snack bar shelves and the refrigerator, bottled water and soda, Gatorade, candy bars, snack bags, napkins, plates, utensils, straws, coffees, hot chocolate, etc.

Please get involved! Join us at our next CYO meeting. We meet once a month on Sunday nights at 6 PM in the Walson Center. Our next meeting is September 18th. Hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
SJV CYO Board

Coaches Clinics

If you have attended the CYO Coaches Clinic during this past school year, and would like to be reimbursed for the fee that you paid to attend, we will be able to help.

Please provide us with a copy of the certificate of attendance, along with instructions regarding to whom to make the check payable, along with the address that you would like the check to be mailed. Put in an envelope marked CYO Coaches Clinic Reimbursement, and drop off at the rectory. We appreciate that you took the time to attend this event; our kids deserve good coaches.

Sports as an Image of the Christian Life

“Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win. Every athlete exercises discipline in every way. They do it to win a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one. Thus I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. No, I drive my body and train it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.”
I Cor 9:24-27

Some Dos and Don'ts For Parents

Some simple advice for making every CYO sport a pleasing and productive activity for all.

  • Cheer for your team.
  • Show interest, enthusiasm, and support for your child.
  • Be in control of your emotions.
  • Help when asked by coaches or officials.
  • Thank the coaches, officials, and other volunteers who conducted the event.

  • Leave the spectator area during competitions to enter the field of play.
  • Advise the coach on how to coach.
  • Try to coach your child during the contest.
  • Make derogatory comments to players, parents, coaches, or officials of either team.
  • Drink alcohol at contests or come to watch contests intoxicated.

Jubilee of Sports People

Playing sports has become very important today, since it can encourage young people to develop important values such as loyalty, perseverance, friendship, sharing and solidarity. Precisely for this reason, in recent years it has continued to grow even more as one of the characteristic phenomena of the modern era, almost a "sign of the times" capable of interpreting humanity's new needs and new expectations. Sports have spread to every corner of the world, transcending differences between cultures and nations.

Because of the global dimensions this activity has assumed, those involved in sports throughout the world have a great responsibility. They are called to make sports an opportunity for meeting and dialogue, over and above every barrier of language, race or culture. Sports, in fact, can make an effective contribution to peaceful understanding between peoples and to establishing the new civilization of love.

Jubilee of Sports People, Homily of Pope John Paul II, October 29, 2000
